Bittersweet Bane of Summer

by Anne Bennett on June 21, 2012

How much is that pastry in the window?

Summer is supposed to be the very best time of year to eat healthfully and lose weight. Local farmers’ markets abound with delicious fruits and vegetables of all kinds. Diet experts tell us that it’s easier to shed excess pounds when we eat lots of them instead of high-calorie processed foods.

Right now I have peaches, strawberries and blueberries in my fridge. What a lovely dessert I can assemble just by washing them and cutting them up.

It’s a no-pain-no-gain (literally) slam dunk!

Are you buying this schtick?  If you are, I have a genuine plastic cornucopia I’d like to sell you because you’ll buy anything.

What I really want to do with those blueberries is make pie. Ditto with the peaches. The strawberries? You know what I’m thinking–shortcake with either whipped cream or ice cream. Name your poison.

There is no easy time of year in which to diet.  If I had to choose, I’d say January is the most diet-friendly month, but then,  you’d have to tune out the Super Bowl. See what I mean?

The unavoidable truth is that losing weight and keeping it off requires a lifelong effort of moderation in all things edible and drinkable, from organic kale to Twinkies to beer. (And like the father’s devotion to Windex in “My Big Fat Greek Wedding,” beer is my personal cure for all ills, thus I cannot eliminate it for medicinal reasons.)

I tend to think of a healthy lifestyle as a life sentence with no parole. That makes it easier for me because I have no way out.

And I get to plan my final meal.

As usual, you make me laugh.
Summer is actually the hardest time for me because I don’t want to move. I don’t mean just exercise but the couch seems to have a magnet and I have just enough energy to get there
