Chicken Blahs

by Anne Bennett on April 8, 2010

Have you ever had them, or I should ask, when was the last time? I’m in the midst of a major chicken breast slump. I realize that I have chosen this route (I take responsibility for my sloth) but there is a reason for my trip down the stultifying path of poultry.

I have not, of late, been enthusiastic about cooking beef or pork. I think it has something to do with all of the TV shows I’ve seen where they discuss the horrible lives that cows and pigs live before they become shrink-wrapped pieces of meat at the supermarket. True, chickens share the same fate, but chickens are ugly and stupid. Somehow I don’t mind their being conned into those cages. What idiots.

I write in jest, but only partially. I shopped at Whole Foods today, and I could not bring myself to buy two organic pork chops. What did I purchase instead? Two chicken breasts. Again.

I have decided that I will either have to become a vegetarian (which right now doesn’t seem plausible to me) or I will have to come to peace with eating humanely raised and slaughtered versions of the two animals pictured below. Sigh. Perhaps I’ve been a pet owner too long.

Don't worry, Mr. Cow. I've got a plan to save you. You're going to hold a big sign that says, "Eat more chikin"!

Anne, I buy all my meat from Schenker Familly Farms in McCune KS. They have received a Certification in Humane animal Practices and they are the nicest people you will ever meet. they deliver every Monday to the KC area and more often in the summer. You can contact them at their website: schenkerfarms.com or they are on Facebook. Their prices are quite reasonable and the food is fab.
