Today is Shirley Temple’s 85th birthday. If you’re an American baby-boomer, you grew up watching reruns of her movies on TV in the 1950’s and ’60’s.
Shirley began her career at the ripe old age of three in 1932 and starred in films designed specifically to showcase her prodigious talents; she was an accomplished singer and dancer, and to top it off she could even act. Her movies helped to cheer doleful Americans during the Depression, not a small accomplishment for a little girl.
I may be over 60, but when I eat soup I still sing, “Animal crackers in my soup, monkeys and tigers loop the loop. Golly oh gee do I have fun, swallowing animals one by one.” Shirley was 7 years old when she sang that song in the 1935 film, “Curly Top.” When I was in college I remember watching “Curly Top” on TV and singing along to every song. I knew them all by heart.
Happy Birthday, Shirley. Thanks for the memories.
