Sniff…sniff…do I smell…beef?
I LOVE beef! Is it a new kind of dog chow? Is it an artificially-flavored beef bone? I LOVE artificial beef flavoring! Can I have some right now?
Calm down, Whitman. I know I don’t cook beef often, but today I’m trying out a recipe for slow cooker provencal stew in the latest Weight Watchers cookbook. And there’s no artificial anything in it.
It’s pretty authentic, as French-style recipes go, with lean chunks of beef, red wine and fresh orange peel (the orange peel is tres Francais). There are other, more typical ingredients too, like tomatoes, carrots, onions and the usual seasonings: bay leaves, thyme and lots of garlic.
Just before it’s finished cooking you toss in a pound of sauteed mushrooms and some Nicoise olives. Again, another nod to the French. Doesn’t that sound scrumptious, Whitman?
Whitman? Where did he go? I must have lost him with the olives.
Tomorrow, if it tastes as good as it smells, look here for the recipe.
