Food Find: McDonald’s Oatmeal!

by Anne Bennett on January 11, 2011

I never thought I’d say this, but there’s a bona fide reason to visit McDonald’s drive-thru lane. Their new breakfast offering of fruit and maple oatmeal is delicious! Really!

In recent years I had pretty much sworn off McDonald’s, save for occasional early morning stops for an Egg McMuffin on the way to the airport. (I loosen up my food rules when I’m at the mercy of major airlines. I figure that if I make it to my destination I can begin eating healthfully again.)

I suspect that McDonald’s is tying their newest breakfast item to the coattails of Starbucks, which introduced their own oatmeal in 2008. Soon afterwards Starbucks announced that its oatmeal was the single most popular food launch in the company’s history. No surprise, then, that McDonald’s retaliated. There’s lots of money to be made in the morning. Breakfast accounts for 25% of McDonald’s daily sales.

On their web site, McDonald’s touts that each bowl contains two servings of whole grain oats and 1/2 cup of fruit, consisting of diced fresh apples, dried cranberries and raisins. There are two kind of apples, and they lend a fresh crunch to the mix. All in all, it’s way better than Starbuck’s version.

The nutritionals aren’t bad either: one serving has 290 calories. I know, that’s not exactly low cal, but it’s downright  virtuous compared to their sausage biscuit.

As I said in the meeting, this tasted pretty good, far better than I had expected from the “Golden Arch Supper Club”. And I’m not a fan of raisons either. If I’m running late for work in the morning, it’s hard to find something decent that I can eat. This will fill that void.”

I read this article on the New York Times about the oatmeal and thought of you:
