Fountain of Yoots Discovered!

by Anne Bennett on April 25, 2011

I knew they’d find it somewhere. And just when I needed it. I went from zero to 60 years in, like, the blink of an eye. How do I forestall decrepitude?

Hey, it's the Fountain of Yoots, as Vinny would say! At Union Station, Kansas City

Turns out it isn’t so very complicated, but I’m gonna bet you aren’t going to like it, not one bit.

Fasten your seatbelts: it’s physical activity, and it’s probably not what you think.

Researchers are now saying that the 30 minutes a day of walking, et al, we thought was good for our health isn’t enough because, when you factor in eight hours of sleep each night, that leaves 15 1/2 hours every day that we are sitting at desks, in cars and on couches. And that, it now turns out, is a bad thing. People who sit a lot have higher cholesterol and waist size, and more diabetes and heart disease.

Bottom line? We aren’t built for long periods of sitting and when we do, our bodies kind of shut down. Our metabolism slows (horror of horrors!) and we get fat and sick. I’m paraphrasing majorly here.

I’d go on, but obviously I’m violating all of the aforementioned by sitting at my computer, so I’m cutting this short and advising you to read more about it, either at the link above from NPR or the New York Times article here. They both say essentially the same thing: use it or lose it.

If you stand while eating a donut, does it count?

Anne– I stand at my computer all day, due to my chronic bad back. Been doing it for years. Sitting kills me, espeically in the car, and now I’m used to the standing.
