Message From Above

by Anne Bennett on March 1, 2011

Today, as I shopped for another mother-of-the-bride dress (I have one in my closet and two more Internet purchases that haven’t arrived yet), I had a fortuitous encounter with a saleswoman.

It so happens that as I entered the store she was in a dressing room trying on jeans for herself. Since she was the dress expert, another associate asked her to come out and assist me. She exited the dressing room wearing a far-too-long pair of dark denims with the tags hanging off.

I remarked that, other than the length, the jeans fit her well. “Yes,” she chuckled as she viewed herself in the mirror, “but just look at my big butt. Hard to find jeans to make that butt look good!”

There was something in her friendly, self-effacing attitude that made me say, “You know, I work for Weight Watchers.” I don’t usually reveal that fact to people on the premise that it might make them feel self-conscious or embarrassed. But for some reason, I didn’t think she would take offense.

She stepped back from the mirror and stared at me for a moment, her eyes and mouth both open wide as if she’d seen an apparition. Then she said, “Oh…my…God! This is a sign. God wants me to join Weight Watchers!”

I have to admit, it did look like a pretty clear sign from above. At the very moment she was trying to find a pair of jeans to cover her derriere, I showed up.

We talked about the new Weight Watchers program and she vowed to join the next day with her daughter, who is getting married in a year. She said that they each want to lose 50 pounds.

I left without a dress (probably a good thing), but as I stepped onto the escalator going down, I heard her say to the other associate, “That woman was sent by God!”

Someone stop me if I sound messianic over the next few days.

Gee, I always thought you were a godess in your own right. I guess a divinely appointed messenger isn’t too bad.

Call me the devil’s advocate here for stroking your ego, but I always thought you were my heaven send… See you in a few week for spring break. p.s. just had a phone interview with WW for a receptionist position!
