New Weight Watchers is Here

by Anne Bennett on November 29, 2010

Weight Watchers’ highly anticipated PointsPlus program launched today in the US.

The new program, developed over the last four years by a team of scientists at Weight Watchers and tested in clinical trials at a major medical university*, is based on a system of PointsPlus values, which are different from and not interchangeable with the program’s old Points values.

What I find really exciting about the new program is its emphasis on healthy eating behaviors. Gone are the days when you could grab a 100-Calorie pack and feel good about it. Now you are encouraged to grab a banana or an apple instead, knowing that it will cost you zero PointsPlus values.

That’s right. Fruit, along with most vegetables, is now a free food. ¬†How’s that for attacking the obesity crisis head-on?

The PointsPlus program features a no-holds-barred approach to the current culture of readily available junk food, which has contributed to our being the fattest nation on earth. WW members will be encouraged, but not required, to choose healthy, filling foods over more highly processed foods.

Don’t fret that you’ll never again be able to enjoy a guilt-free ice cream cone. Weight Watchers’ research concluded that when people feel deprived, they revert to old, unhealthy behaviors that cause them to re-gain any weight they may have lost on a weight loss program. WW members are thus encouraged to occasionally indulge in their favorite treats, albeit in moderation.

I’d suggest attending a Weight Watchers meeting to get the full details. But for my money, PointsPlus is the most thoroughly researched and livable weight loss program in the world. You’ll eat real food, and yes, you’ll even be able to splurge now and then.

Finally, a Win-Win situation!

My curiosity just might be piqued enough to get me to a meeting….will you be discussing this at Friday’s meeting?

I was up at 5 a.m. checking it out, but the website was still “under construction”. Am I obsessive, or what?
I have lots of questions but won’t ask them here…looking forward to getting the answers at your meeting.
