One Thing You Can Do Now: #1 Admit That You Eat Too Much

What one thing can you do right now that would help you get started on the path to losing weight and keeping it off? That’s not a rhetorical question.

People can easily become overwhelmed when they think about all the lifestyle changes they must make in order to be successful: cutting out fast food, reducing portions, eating more fruits and vegetables, drinking water instead of sugary sodas, skipping over the processed food aisles at the supermarket.

And let’s not forget exercise!  Are three days a week enough? Does parking the car at the end of the parking lot count? That’s enough, isn’t it?

Dieters tend to be highly motivated at the beginning of a diet, especially one that we’re paying money for. But after initial success, most of us tend to resort back to our old fattening habits. What’s worse, if we try to diet again after a slip up, we might find that we can’t muster the motivation or the enthusiasm we had before and we wonder, “Why can’t I do it this time? What’s wrong with me?”

A recipe for diet disaster is trying to change too much all at once. It’s just too daunting a process: too many details, too much deprivation and way too much work. I’m tired just thinking about it. 

Difficult tasks are easier when you break them down into smaller bits, making one change, committing to it, and then adding on from there. I propose that the first step should be this: admitting that you eat too much.  It’s simple math–we burn so many calories in a day; when we consume more calories than we burn, they get stored as fat.  

Taking responsibility for our eating is a vital step to changing our habits and our lives. Nobody else can do this for us, because like it or not, we are the ultimate masters of our fates. It’s both a scary and a liberating thought to realize that we have that kind of power.

So let’s begin here: admit to yourself that you eat too much and that you’re going to do what it takes to learn how to eat less. I know, I know,  it’s tough love, but there has to be a #1 thing you can do, and this is it.
