2nd Place for a Good Reason

In its quest to move up from second place in the burger joint standings, (behind world-leader MacDonalds, of course) Burger King has announced a new dessert–the bacon sundae!

This makes me wonder: what fat guy is making the big decisions at Burger King? I’m no junk food novice: I get the sweet/salty lure of the fudge and the bacon, but really, is it worth 510 calories, 18 grams of fat and 61 grams of sugar? Not in my books. I have limited calories to spend each day, and that’s way too big a hit for what sounds like a disappointing payoff.

Let’s try to understand: Burger King’s market share has been steadily sliding since the introduction of new, upscale venues such as Smashburger and Five Guys Burgers. Obviously, BK needed to shake things up in order to bring back the loyal, have-it-your-way throngs. This sundae was their retaliation.

Whenever Champ and I go to a bad movie, I come out and say, “Why didn’t the producer and director call me? I could have told them that they needed a re-write and lots of editing.”

In this case, the fat guy at Burger King should have made the call before making this stupid decision. I would have suggested salty peanuts, perhaps, but certainly no bacon. I could have helped him save face.

Alas, here I sit by the telephone. I think of all the money that could be saved, if only it would ring.

Just returned from a week in New York where the buzz kill Mayor makes every restaurant and food vendor post how many calories are in their food. They sell a donut hamburger at Yankee Stadium thats 1100 cal…..and Johnny Rockets has shakes that are even higher. Sure helps when you are trying to decide.
