What (Not) to Eat in 2013

by Anne Bennett on January 9, 2013

It’s January, which means it’s time to get back on the healthy eating bandwagon after all the goodies we enjoyed during the holidays. Lulu has resolved to eat better in 2013. She’s into carrots: baby carrots, big carrots, as you can see, carrots of all kinds.

Good girl, Lulu. You make a very attractive role model. However, your supposed enthusiasm for that fluffy carrot isn’t very convincing, especially since I left a half slice of bread on the kitchen counter this morning after making myself a piece of toast; I turned my head for a moment and when I looked back around, it was gone.

There you were with that stupid carrot in your mouth, looking as innocent as a gluten-free vegetarian, and no bread in sight.

Perhaps you’re just epitomizing the difficulties we all face in January: we know carrots are good for us, but bread is more fun. Way more fun, especially when it’s slathered in butter and Swiss cherry jam.

Stay the course, Lulu. It will get better. Valentine’s Day is almost here.

Woke up at 6:45 am, made coffee, peeled and chopped carrots, chopped shallots and garlic, washed my broccolini, green beans, asparagus. Placed all the veggies in a large ziploc bag with lemon juice from one lemon, a few tbs of olive oil, Maldon sea salt, pepper, dried rosemary or any other dried herbs you may like. Placed the Ziploc in fridge.
